Historical city festival in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

In 1631 Earl Tilly besieged Rothenburg with his imperial army. During the siege Rothenburg’s gunpowder reservoir in the Klingen-bastion exploded and the city was forced to surrender.
After this successful siege Tilly made many demands and he allowed his army to pillage the city as a reward for their efforts. The Mayor of the time, Georg Nusch, was supposedly able to negotiate a bet, the so called “Meistertunk”.
These dramatic events have been brought to the stage every year since 1881 in a historical re-enactment.
